360 DOUBLE VILLA
Project info
Architect: 99 01 Architects
Location: Glasgow, UK
Type: Competition Entry for The Alexander Thomson Society
Year: 2016
The 360° Double Villa reinterprets Alexander “Greek” Thomson’s 1856 Villa Maria - two identical houses composed to read as a single residence. The proposal totals 428 m2 (214 m2 per home) and is organized around a central atrium, within a 26 m diameter plan. Drawing from principles of ancient Greek architecture - perimeter presence, the peristyle courtyard, and a clear tripartite order - the scheme transforms two linear residences into complementary semi-circular forms that define an inner courtyard. Lifted volumes create access, framed city views, and sheltered exterior space, while the overall expression remains restrained and rigorous. Privacy is addressed through controlled orientation and planting, supported by electrically switchable glazing with adjustable opacity to modulate visibility as required.
