The oiko-s system is a six story residential building that could accommodate various types of households in a unique environment that blends privacy with social interaction in the form of a new age vertical neighborhood arrangement. The focal point of the proposal is a blending between the archetype of the ancient Athenian house and the modernists’ type of a multi storey residential building. The archetype ancient Athenian house which was relatively small and consisted of a series of rooms arranged around a central courtyard. This configuration provided the building with light and ventilation. For security reasons there were few or no exterior windows, thus characterizing the houses of the time as introverted. In the 1920’s Le Corbusier conceived his architecture manifesto and The Five Points of Architecture – pilotis, open ground plan, free design of the façade, horizontal window stripes, roof garden – were applied to buildings constructed mainly of glass, steel and concrete. Through the process of overlapping these 2 archetypes and inverting them, the blended result tries to achieve the required balance between light, air and privacy.
